Frequently asked questions

  • Why does film photography cost more than digital?

Film photography involves real material costs. Every roll of film, development, and high-resolution scanning incurs a cost per roll. A single roll holds just 36 frames, meaning each frame carries a far greater cost than its digital equivalent. Beyond the tangible costs, shooting on film encourages a slower, more intentional approach that results in images with a warmth and grain that digital simply cannot replicate. You're investing in a process as much as a product.

  • How many images will I receive?

Each package lists a minimum number of edited scans. In practice most sessions deliver more, but the minimum is your guarantee. Every delivered image has been selected and color-reviewed before you receive it. Quality over quantity is the guiding principle.

  • What film stocks do you shoot?

We primarily shoot Kodak Portra 800 for color work and Kodak TMax 400 for black-and-white. Both handle a wide range of lighting conditions beautifully. Portra 800 especially loves the soft, directional light you get in Montana evenings. We are always testing new rolls under different conditions to widen our range and fit different styles, something we discuss with each client.

  • Will I receive digital backups?

Yes. All delivered scans are provided as high-resolution digital files via an online gallery. You'll be able to download, share, and print from those files. The gallery link is yours to keep.

  • How long does turnaround take?

Typical turnaround is 4–8 weeks from your session date. Film must be developed and scanned by the lab before we can begin editing and color review, so please plan accordingly, especially for time-sensitive events. Rush processing may be available; reach out to ask.

  • Do you travel for destination sessions?

Absolutely. We're based in Kalispell in the Flathead Valley and regularly photograph across the region from Glacier National Park and Whitefish to Missoula and beyond. For destination sessions outside Montana, we provide a custom quote that covers travel, accommodation, and any associated costs. We never close the door on a place we find compelling.
